"Until they become conscious they will never rebel, and until after they have rebelled they cannot become conscious". (61)
Winston has now turned to the proles to defeat the party. He wants and is the only hope to overcome the party. He knows that the proles won't rebel against the party because they are filled with fear. The party controls their minds and everyone is to afraid to rebel or they will get vaporized. Winston also knows that they won't rebel until they are aware of their surroundings. Their eyes need to open in order for them to see how cruel they are to them.
"Freedom is the freedom to say that two plus two make four. If that is granted, all else follows" (69)
Winston thinks that freedom is when we have our own mind and by not believing what the party says. They manipulate their minds on to thinking what they want. It might be wrong but to the people it is true. So Winston is saying that freedom is the freedom to say the truth. Winston knows that what the party says is not the truth and the only way to not get manipulated by them is to always be aware of the truth.
